Piazzetta

Performance at opening: Juliette Uzor and Elie Autin, Saturday November 25

Piazzetta is an installation consisting of polystyrene squares. It shows a floor structure reminding of a public place. Instead of massive stones, Juliette uses light polystyrene-material, which is actually used for isolation in building construction. The polystyrene was painted with acryl colors in grey nuances and broken by hand into squares of about 8 x 8 cm. The floor arrangement is inspired by the standard construction of a public place, which follows the form of half-circles. The pattern consists of virtuosic movements and there is no strict structure in the Piazzetta, even though it seems to show an order. The installation combines sculpture and painting and each part is unique. The spectator cannot enter the Piazzetta, but has to walk around the installation, that ends where the walls of the room begin. There is only a narrow side-path remaining at the borders of the installation. Juliette’s work deals with the meaning of inside and outside, with the private versus the public. She installs something that is known as a fragment of the outside in an interior context. The Piazzetta considers different meanings of place, such as the history and the function of the architectural square, city theories or the abstract meaning of place as space or site. Physically it confronts the spectator with a situation that contains both density and wideness of a public matter.
